A palavra delírio vem do latim e significa “sair do trilho”. Delírio é uma ideia ou um pensamento que não corresponde à realidade do indivíduo. A pessoa, por exemplo, começa a acreditar que está sendo perseguida ou vigiada ou que existem câmeras que espionam seus atos. Os temas dos delírios costumam ser bizarros, implausíveis, mas a pessoa acredita neles com convicção, não modificando suas ideias mesmo após exaustiva demonstração da impossibilidade desses delírios. Delírios podem ocorrer em diversos transtornos mentais, particularmente na esquizofrenia.
